If your idea of fence maintenance is not doing any, vinyl fencing is hard to beat. This is a great option for homeowners who want a fence they can install once and largely forget about with no spring staining, no scraping and sealing, and no wondering whether another season of Chicago weather has finally taken its toll. With vinyl, a quick cleaning is usually all it takes to keep the fence looking fresh year after year.

First Fence Company has been installing vinyl and PVC fencing throughout the Chicago area since 1989. We’re a family-owned company in Hillside, giving our crews convenient access to homeowners across the western and northwest suburbs, including Elmhurst, Oak Park, Downers Grove, Lombard, Wheaton, La Grange, Villa Park, Des Plaines, Naperville, and the surrounding communities. With more than 100 fencing styles to choose from, we can help you find a vinyl fence that is low maintenance without sacrificing the look or privacy you want for your property.

Vinyl Fence Styles & Privacy Options in Chicagoland

Vinyl fencing is not one-size-fits-all. The right style depends on what you want the fence to do, whether that’s block the view into your yard, give you privacy without making the space feel enclosed, define a property line, or simply add a finished look to the landscape. Height, spacing, color, and even the way the fence handles wind can make a meaningful difference once it is installed.

At First Fence Company, we install a wide range of vinyl and PVC fence styles, from full privacy panels to traditional picket fencing and everything in between. Here are the options we install most often and where each one tends to make the most sense.

  • Solid privacy panels: Tongue-and-groove boards with no gaps, most often 6 feet tall. This is the most common vinyl fence we install and the one that does the most work. It screens a patio, closes off a yard completely, and reads as a clean, finished wall from both sides which keeps the conversation with your neighbor short and pleasant. Solid panels catch wind, so post depth and reinforcement matter more here than on any open style.
  • Semi-private styles: A solid lower section with spaced spindles, lattice, or an open top section above it. You keep most of the screening at eye level while letting light and air through, which makes a small yard feel less boxed in. This is the style we recommend most often when someone likes the idea of privacy but worries the yard will feel closed in.
  • Picket fencing: Spaced pickets in the three-to-four-foot range, for defining a front or side yard, framing a garden, or containing a smaller dog without hiding the house. It’s the white picket fence people picture, minus the repainting.
  • Wood-grain and color options: Vinyl is no longer just white. We install tan and sand, adobe, clay, mocha and brown tones, black, and textured wood-grain finishes that read convincingly like stained cedar from the sidewalk. Darker colors and wood-grains typically sit at a higher price point than standard white.
  • Gates to match: Most runs needs at least one gate, and gates are where a vinyl fence either holds up or starts to sag. We offer reinforced posts with quality hardware, sized for walk-through access, wheelbarrows, or double-gate driveway width.

Vinyl Fence Quality: What to Look for Before You Buy

Before you compare vinyl fence estimates, look beyond the price per foot. Two quotes for a 6-foot white vinyl privacy fence can look identical on paper while specifying very different products. The material itself and the way the fence is engineered has a lot to do with how it performs after years of Chicago winters, summer sun, wind, and temperature swings.

Quality vinyl is typically engineered with features that help it withstand those conditions. Co-extruded construction, impact modifiers, and UV inhibitors can improve resistance to cracking, fading, and weathering. Wall thickness also varies by manufacturer. On taller privacy fences, an aluminum-reinforced bottom rail can help prevent long panels from bowing, while reinforced gate posts provide the strength needed to support a heavy, frequently used gate.

We install vinyl and PVC fencing from manufacturers we’ve worked with for years, including EverGuard, Country Estate, and Catalyst. When we quote your project, we won’t just hand you a per-foot number. We’ll explain what you’re getting, including the material, construction, reinforcement, and other details that can make one vinyl fence a better long-term investment than another.

How Vinyl Fencing Holds Up in Chicago Weather

Chicagoland puts fences through just about every condition they can face including freeze-and-thaw cycles, summer heat, heavy clay soil, standing moisture, road salt, and plenty of wind. Vinyl handles these conditions remarkably well, which is one reason it has become such a popular low-maintenance alternative to wood.

Unlike wood, vinyl won’t rot, absorb water, or attract insects. Sprinkler overspray and wet mulch are far less concerning, too. Quality vinyl is also designed to resist fading from prolonged sun exposure, so you don’t get the uneven weathering and constant refinishing associated with many wood fences.

There is one Chicago-weather caveat worth knowing, vinyl becomes more brittle in extreme cold. Most damage we see isn’t caused by the weather itself but by something hitting the fence when temperatures are low such as a snowblower, a plow pushing snow into the fence line, a falling branch, or a vehicle backing into a post. That’s generally a repairable problem, but it’s one more reason to think carefully about fence placement, particularly along driveways and areas where snow gets piled.

A good vinyl fence still depends on proper installation. Posts need to be set deep enough and secured in concrete to withstand frost movement, wind, and the weight of the fence. Our crews dig to the depth required by your local municipality, and we contact JULIE for utility locates before installation begins. The vinyl may be low-maintenance, but the installation can’t be an afterthought.

Vinyl Fence Maintenance: What It Actually Takes

Low maintenance doesn’t mean zero maintenance, and we’d rather be clear about what vinyl requires. The good news is that the maintenance is about as simple as fencing gets.

There is no painting, staining, sealing, or sanding. For most homeowners, maintenance amounts to an occasional rinse with a garden hose to wash away dust, pollen, and everyday dirt. If a green film develops on the shaded north side of the fence, or road grime builds up along a busy street, mild dish soap and water with a soft brush will usually take care of it. For stubborn scuffs, a non-abrasive household cleaner can do the job.

Some homeowners clean their fence once or twice a year; others barely do more than hose it off when they happen to be working in the yard. Either way, you won’t be spending your weekends sanding, staining, or repainting it.

Vinyl Fence Repair & Replacement in Chicagoland

We don’t just install vinyl fencing, we repair it, too. Common calls include cracked or damaged pickets, loose rails, posts knocked out of plumb by frost or a vehicle, and gates that no longer line up or latch properly.

Repairing an older vinyl fence can be more complicated than it looks. Manufacturers change their product lines, so if your fence is 10 or 15 years old, the exact profile, color, or component may no longer be available. That’s why we recommend having the fence evaluated before ordering replacement parts online. We’ll determine whether we can make a clean repair, replace a section, or recommend replacing a larger portion of the run. If a full replacement makes more sense, we can also help you phase the project, for example, starting with the street-facing sections and tackling the rest later.

Commercial & Multifamily Vinyl Fence Installation in Chicagoland

Vinyl isn’t just for backyards. We install PVC fencing for commercial properties, condominium associations, apartment communities, and property managers, including taller privacy screening, perimeter fencing, pool-area fencing, and enclosures for dumpsters and other equipment.

For property managers, the appeal is straightforward: vinyl doesn’t need to be painted or stained on a recurring maintenance schedule, and individual damaged components can often be replaced without rebuilding an entire fence line. We can also plan larger installations in phases, allowing you to address the highest-priority areas while working within an annual maintenance or capital budget.

Vinyl Fence Permits & Village Code Requirements in Chicagoland

Before a fence goes in, you must account for your village’s rules. Nearly every Chicagoland municipality requires a permit for a new fence, but the requirements can vary significantly from one town to the next. Height limits may differ between the front and back yard, corner lots can have additional sight-line requirements, and some municipalities specify which side of the fence must face the neighbor or require a particular setback from the property line.

First Fence Company helps you prepare the drawings, plat of survey, and material information your village requires for the application. The property owner submits the application and obtains the permit in their own name, while we provide the information and documentation needed to keep the process moving.

If you’re installing a vinyl fence around a swimming pool, there may be additional requirements for fence height, gate placement, self-closing or self-latching hardware, and other safety features. In many municipalities, the fence is reviewed as part of the pool permit rather than through a separate fence permit. We’ve worked through the permitting process in communities throughout the area and can tell you what to expect before installation begins.

Vinyl (PVC) Fencing FAQs

How long does a vinyl fence last in the Chicago area?

A quality vinyl fence installed correctly should give you decades of service. Vinyl doesn’t rot, warp, or attract insects, and holds its color under UV exposure. What determines lifespan here is the quality of material along with a proper installation, posts set below frost depth in concrete, reinforced bottom rails on tall privacy panels, and properly built gates.

Is vinyl fencing maintenance-free?

It’s low maintenance rather than truly maintenance-free. There’s no painting, staining, or sealing at any point in its life. What it needs is an occasional rinse with a hose, and mild soap and water for green film or road grime on the shaded or street-facing sides.

Will a vinyl fence crack in cold weather?

Vinyl is somewhat more brittle in deep cold, so the cracks we’re called out for come from impact rather than temperature alone such as snowblowers, plowed snow, branches, or a vehicle. Higher-grade co-extruded vinyl with impact modifiers holds up considerably better, and damaged pickets or panels can be replaced individually.

Why are some vinyl fence quotes so much cheaper than others?

Usually because the product isn’t the same. Wall thickness, whether the vinyl is co-extruded with UV and impact protection, whether tall privacy panels have aluminum-reinforced bottom rails, and whether gate posts are reinforced all vary between manufacturers. Post depth and whether posts are set in concrete matter just as much. We’re happy to walk through exactly what’s in our estimate.

Can I get a vinyl fence that looks like wood?

Yes. Textured wood-grain PVC has come a long way and reads convincingly like stained wood from the street, without the staining schedule. It’s available in several tones and typically costs more than standard white.

Is vinyl a good choice for dogs?

It’s a popular one. Solid vinyl privacy panels give a dog nothing to see through and nothing to get a foothold on, which helps with fence-line reactivity and climbing, and there’s no wood at the bottom to chew or claw. For smaller dogs, we’ll talk through picket spacing or a solid-bottom style so there are no gaps to squeeze through.

Do you repair vinyl fences you didn’t install?

Yes. The main variable is whether your fence profile is still manufactured, since style catalogs change over the years. We’ll take a look, tell you whether a clean match is possible, and give you options, including phasing the work if a full replacement isn’t the right time.

Do I need a permit for a vinyl fence?

Almost certainly, and the requirements differ by village including height, finished-side orientation, setbacks, and corner-lot sight lines. We help prepare the drawings, plat of survey, and material details your village asks for, and the property owner submits the application and obtains the permit in their own name.
