Key Requirements for Fencing in Elmhurst, IL
Before your fence goes in the ground, the City of Elmhurst has a few rules worth knowing, and we handle most of this for you:
- A Fence Permit Application and Diagram are required from the City of Elmhurst Building Department before installation. Your plat of survey is used to create the diagram showing the fence location, height and materials.
- Corner lots have visibility-triangle restrictions near intersections and sidewalks. Fences can't obstruct sightlines for drivers and pedestrians, which affects fence height and placement near the corner of your property. There are solutions available within the code, we can design around these restrictions.
- Some zoning districts may cap fence height lower than the standard 6 feet, so confirm your zoning district before finalizing a design. In general, taller privacy fences are limited to rear and side yards, with lower height limits in front yards.
- The "good side" of the fence typically must face outward toward your neighbors and the street, with posts and rails facing your yard.
For your exact zoning district and requirements, you can review the City of Elmhurst Building Department resources or the city's fence ordinance, or simply ask our consultant during your free estimate. It's also a good idea (and a good-neighbor move) to let adjacent homeowners know a new fence is going in before installation day.
