Fence Company in Berwyn, IL
First Fence Company is a residential and commercial fence contractor based in Hillside, IL, serving Berwyn since 1989 with fence installation, repair, and gate services.
Berwyn is a bungalow town. The Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District holds one of the largest concentrations of brick Chicago-style bungalows anywhere in the country, block after block of glazed brick, hip roofs, and deep backyards laid out in the 1920s. Homes here sit close to their neighbors, garages open onto the alley, and a good fence has to define the yard, add privacy where lots are tight, and look right against a nine-decade-old brick façade.
First Fence Company is a family-owned fence company in Berwyn, IL that serves homes and businesses across Chicagoland. From our shop in nearby Hillside, our fence installers are a short drive up the road, close enough to know Berwyn's blocks, its lot sizes, and its permit office. We design and install long-lasting residential and commercial fencing using quality materials and more than 100 styles to choose from, and we work with you to find the design that fits your home, your budget, and your street. Residential Fence Installation in Berwyn, IL
Whether you're closing off the yard for a new dog, adding privacy to a bungalow lot where the neighbor's window looks right in, or replacing a fence that's leaned through one too many Chicago winters, our residential fence contractors help you choose a style that suits both the house and the way you use the space. Here are the residential fence types we install.
Custom-Designed Fences
No two Berwyn lots are exactly alike, and our custom work reflects that. If you want a fence that matches a specific brick color, follows an unusual grade, wraps a corner lot, or blends two materials, our consultants design it around your property rather than forcing your property to fit a stock panel. With over 100 styles as a starting point, "custom" here means built for your yard.
Wood Fences
A classic wood fence brings warmth and privacy that pairs naturally with Berwyn's brick bungalows and frame two-flats. We install Western Red Cedar, a wood prized for its natural resistance to moisture and insects and its ability to hold up through our freeze-and-thaw seasons. As one of the area's trusted wood fence installers in Berwyn, IL, we'll help you decide between full privacy, semi-privacy, and picket styles.
Vinyl (PVC) Fences
Vinyl is the choice for homeowners who would rather not spend time maintaining their fence. A quality PVC fence resists fading, won't need staining or sealing, and wipes clean with a garden hose, an easy fit for busy households that want the look without the upkeep. We offer privacy, semi-privacy, and picket styles in colors and textures designed to keep their finish for years.
Composite Fences
Composite fencing combines the substance of wood with the low maintenance of synthetic materials. It's durable, pest resistant, waterproof, and highly customizable, a strong option if you want a rich, solid-looking privacy fence without an annual to-do list. It's become a popular pick for homeowners updating an older yard to something more permanent.
Chain Link Fences
Chain link remains one of the most practical and budget-friendly ways to enclose a yard, and it's a staple on Berwyn's alley-facing lots and deeper rear yards. It's dependable for containing pets and marking boundaries, and vinyl-coated options in black or green read far cleaner than bare galvanized while blending into landscaping. Our chain link fence contractors in Berwyn, IL install residential and light-commercial systems built to last.
Aluminum Fences
Aluminum fencing delivers the elegant, wrought-iron look without the rust or the upkeep. It's ideal where you want to define the yard or enclose a pool while keeping sightlines open, and it handles Berwyn's sloping and stepped grades gracefully because each section can rack to follow the ground. We're glad to handle your aluminum fence installation in Berwyn, IL in a range of heights and picket styles.
Ornamental Steel Fences
For homeowners who want more strength and presence than aluminum, ornamental steel offers a substantial, high-security look with the same timeless lines. It's a handsome way to frame a front walk on a rear-half lot or add a formal edge that stands up against classic bungalow brickwork.
Iron Fences
Traditional iron fencing brings genuine old-world character, a natural match for Berwyn's historic streetscapes and vintage architecture. With intricate detailing and real heft, a wrought iron fence in Berwyn, IL makes a statement at an entrance or property line that few other materials match.
Fence Repair & Replacement
Berwyn's older fences take a beating from wind, age, and the occasional storm. We repair leaning posts, sagging gates, and damaged sections, and when a fence is past saving, we handle full fence replacement in Berwyn, IL. We'll give you a straight assessment of whether a repair will hold or whether replacement is the better value, no pressure to tear out something that has years left in it. For storm and wind damage, we can get your yard secure again quickly.
Commercial Fence Installation in Berwyn, IL
Berwyn's business life runs along its corridors, the Cermak Road commercial strip once nicknamed "The Bohemian Wall Street," the Ogden Avenue stretch of historic Route 66, and the walkable Depot District around the Metra stations. As a commercial fence company, First Fence secures storefronts, lots, institutional properties, and the many two-flats and courtyard buildings that fill Berwyn's blocks. Our commercial fence installation in Berwyn, IL is built for durability, security, and clean appearance.
Industrial & Recreational Fencing
From perimeter security around equipment and storage yards to enclosures for parks, courts, and play areas, we install heavy-gauge systems engineered to hold up under daily use. We size the mesh, posts, and framework to the job, whether that's securing a service yard off Ogden or fencing a recreation space.
Access Control & Gates
A fence is only as secure as its gate. We install and service manual and automated gates, including swing and slide gates, pedestrian gates, and access-control systems for driveways, parking areas, and loading zones, so you control who comes and goes.
Security Fencing
For properties that need a stronger deterrent, we install high-security fencing with anti-climb designs, heavier materials, and reinforced hardware. We'll recommend the right height and configuration to protect your building, inventory, and staff without turning the property into a fortress.
Dumpster & Equipment Enclosures
Berwyn's commercial and multi-family properties often need screening that keeps refuse areas, HVAC units, and outdoor storage out of sight and tidy. We build enclosures that meet screening expectations and stand up to constant use.
Ornamental Steel & Aluminum for Business
Where a commercial property wants curb appeal along with security, ornamental steel and aluminum deliver a polished, professional edge that still controls access.
For property managers and boards, we provide detailed proposals, carry full commercial insurance, and can phase larger projects to work around your operations and budget.
Pool Fence Installation in Berwyn, IL
If you have a pool, fencing isn't optional, it's part of keeping the area safe and meeting the requirements tied to your swimming pool. Rather than a standalone barrier, pool fencing is addressed through the pool permit process, and we'll make sure your enclosure and gates are set up correctly with self-closing, self-latching hardware.
Aluminum is a favorite for pools because it resists rust, keeps clear sightlines to the water, and looks clean around a patio. Many homeowners also want privacy so they can enjoy the backyard without an audience, and we can pair or plan your enclosure with a privacy fence to give you both. We do not install removable mesh pool fencing.
Permits for Fences in Berwyn
Berwyn requires a building permit for fence projects, and the city has a few rules worth knowing before you build. Fences must sit within your own property lines, and the finished side has to face outward toward your neighbors and the street. Height is generally limited, taller privacy fencing is typically allowed in rear and side yards, while fences toward the front of the lot are restricted, since front-yard fencing isn't permitted in most cases. A completed fence is inspected, and contractors working in Berwyn must be licensed with the city.
First Fence can assist with the permit process by preparing your project drawings, helping with your plat of survey, and pointing you to the City of Berwyn Building Department so you know exactly what to file. As the property owner, you must submit the application and obtain the permit yourself.
Why Berwyn Chooses First Fence
Since 1989, First Fence has grown into one of Chicagoland's most recognized fencing companies. We're family owned and operated, we use quality materials and expert installers, and we've built our reputation the old-fashioned way, through craftsmanship and word of mouth. Because we handle residential, commercial, and specialty work, you can trust us with any fencing job, from a single backyard bungalow fence to a full commercial perimeter.
When you're ready to talk about your project, our team will take the time to get to know you and your yard before recommending anything.

Fencing Services in Berwyn, IL FAQs
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Berwyn?
Yes. Berwyn requires a building permit for fence projects. Your fence must be built within your property lines with the finished side facing outward, and the completed work is inspected. First Fence can help you prepare the drawings, material details, and plat of survey, and point you to the City of Berwyn Building Department, though as the property owner, you must submit the application and obtain the permit yourself.
How tall can my fence be in Berwyn?
Taller privacy fencing is generally allowed in rear and side yards, while fences toward the front of the lot are restricted. Exact height limits depend on where the fence sits and your specific lot, so we'll confirm the current requirements with you during your estimate.
What's the best low-maintenance fence for my yard?
If you'd rather not stain, seal, or paint, vinyl (PVC) and aluminum are the two most popular low-maintenance choices. Vinyl gives you solid privacy with an easy hose-down cleanup, and aluminum offers an elegant, rust-resistant look that keeps sightlines open. We'll help you weigh your options based on how you use your yard.
Do you install Western Red Cedar or pressure-treated pine?
We install Western Red Cedar for our wood fences. It's naturally resistant to moisture and insects and weathers beautifully through Chicago winters. If you've been reading about pressure-treated pine, we're happy to talk through the differences, it's a fair question, and most homeowners feel confident about cedar once we do.
Can you match or replace an existing fence?
Often, yes. Whether you need a few boards, a bent post, or a full section replaced after a storm, we'll assess whether a repair will hold or whether replacement is the smarter value, and we handle both.
Do you work on commercial and multi-family properties in Berwyn?
Absolutely. We install and service commercial, industrial, and recreational fencing, access-control gates, and enclosures, and we provide detailed proposals and full insurance documentation for property managers and boards.
