Small Village, Every Yard Its Own Story
Clarendon Hills packs a lot of character into 1.8 square miles. Passing florists once called this stretch "Daisy Fields" for the wildflowers that grew here, and the village still leans into that history every June at Daisy Days. Locals call it the Volunteer Village, and it has the kind of compact, walkable layout where you really can stroll from most homes to the Metra station downtown. That closeness is part of the charm and it's also what makes fencing here its own thing.
On tighter village lots, your fence line is often just a few steps from a neighbor's window, a shared driveway, or a busy sidewalk near Prospect Park or the train. That changes the conversation. Some homeowners want a solid privacy fence to carve out a quiet corner for the patio; others want something open and low across the front, so the yard still reads as part of the streetscape. Corner lots come with their own visibility rules near intersections that we'll walk you through before a single post goes in.
As a residential fence contractor that works these DuPage County villages week in and week out, we design around your specific lot.
Residential Fence Installation in Clarendon Hills, IL
As a full-service residential fence contractor, First Fence installs every major style, and our fence consultants take the time to match the material to your home, your lot, and your reasons for fencing in the first place. Here's a look at what we build.
Wood Fences — Western Red Cedar
A wood fence brings warmth and natural privacy that's hard to beat, and it's a classic fit for Clarendon Hills' established, tree-lined blocks. The wood we install is Western Red Cedar, prized for its natural stability and good looks as it weathers.
Vinyl (PVC) Fences
Vinyl is the go-to for homeowners who do not want a fence that requires regular upkeep. A quality PVC fence holds its color, shrugs off Chicago winters, and cleans up with a garden hose with no staining, no sealing, and no seasonal upkeep. It's a popular pick among busy families and longtime residents alike. As a vinyl fence company serving Clarendon Hills, we install privacy, semi-privacy, and picket styles, and we're happy to show you samples during your free estimate.
Aluminum Fences
Aluminum fencing gives you the elegant, open look of iron with far less maintenance, which makes it a favorite for framing front yards, gardens, and pool areas. It's powder-coated for a durable finish, works beautifully on gently graded lots, and comes in a range of styles including flat top, spear top, and more. If you're weighing aluminum fence installation in Clarendon Hills, it's an economical, long-lasting alternative to wrought iron that keeps sightlines open.
Ornamental Steel Fences
When you want the same open, decorative profile as aluminum but with more heft, ornamental steel delivers. It's a strong, handsome choice for homeowners who want defined boundaries and lasting curb appeal, and it pairs well with masonry columns and other architectural touches.
Iron Fences
For timeless character, nothing quite matches iron. A wrought iron fence in Clarendon Hills adds a distinguished, custom look to historic and high-end homes, with detailing you won't find in off-the-shelf panels. If the maintenance of true iron gives you pause, we'll gladly point you toward aluminum for a similar look with less upkeep.
Chain Link Fences
Practical, affordable, and low maintenance, a chain link fence is a dependable way to enclose a yard, contain a dog, or secure a play area without blocking light or air. It's a workhorse option, and we install it with the same care we bring to our decorative fences, properly tensioned, square, and built to hold up.
Composite Fences
Modern composite fencing offers the substantial look of wood with the easy care of vinyl. It's durable, pest-resistant, waterproof, and highly customizable, a smart middle ground for homeowners who want privacy and a premium appearance without an ongoing maintenance list.
Custom-Designed Fences
Sometimes the property calls for something one of a kind. Our custom-designed fences let you combine materials, heights, and details to suit an unusual lot line, a distinctive home, or a specific design idea. Bring us the vision, our team has been designing custom fencing since 1989.
Commercial Fence Installation in Clarendon Hills, IL
First Fence is also a commercial fence company, and we handle projects for businesses, property managers, and institutions along Ogden Avenue, 55th Street, and throughout the area. We plan the work around your operations and keep the site clean and safe from start to finish.
Commercial Chain Link & Security Fencing
Chain link remains the backbone of commercial fencing because it is cost-effective, durable, and ideal for enclosing lots, storage areas, and equipment. We can add privacy slats, taller heights, and heavier gauges where security is the priority.
Ornamental Steel & Aluminum Security Fencing
For a commercial frontage that needs to look as good as it performs, ornamental steel and aluminum provide a polished, professional appearance with real perimeter security. It's a strong fit for offices, multi-family properties, and community spaces.
Industrial & Recreational Fencing
From warehouse perimeters to ball fields and recreational areas, we install fencing built for heavy use and long service. Tell us the application and we'll spec the right materials and height.
Privacy Screening & Dumpster Enclosures
Clarendon Hills requires commercial, multi-family, and PUD properties to screen dumpster and refuse areas behind a solid enclosure, and we build these to code. We also install privacy screening to tidy up service areas, mechanicals, and outdoor storage.
Access Control & Automated Gates
Need to manage who comes and goes? Our gate installation services include swing and slide gates plus access-control and automated gate systems for commercial sites. We'll integrate the gate with your entry and security setup so it's as convenient as it is secure.
Specialty Fences
Pool Fencing
A pool fence keeps children and pets safe and helps you meet local safety requirements. In Clarendon Hills, pool enclosure requirements are handled as part of the swimming pool permit and inspection process rather than as a separate fence permit, and we'll help make sure your enclosure and self-latching gates are ready for that inspection. If you're planning pool fence installation in Clarendon Hills ahead of a deadline, let us know your timeline early.
Puppy Pickets
Have a smaller dog that can slip through standard spacing? Puppy pickets add extra vertical bars near the bottom of an aluminum fence, closing off the yard so your dog stays where it belongs without changing the fence's clean look.
Custom Gates
A gate is the part of your fence you touch every day, so it should feel solid and swing true. We build and install custom gates including garden gates, driveway gates, and matching entry gates sized and hung to work smoothly for years.
Pergolas, Trellises & Custom Woodworking
Our woodworking doesn't stop at the fence line. We design and build pergolas, trellises, and other custom wood structures that extend your outdoor living space and complement your new fence.
Fence Repair & Replacement in Clarendon Hills, IL
Not every job is a brand-new fence. A storm rolls through, a post rots at the base, a gate stops latching, or a car finds the corner of the fence, and suddenly you need it fixed. First Fence handles fence repair in Clarendon Hills of all kinds including post replacement, panel and board repairs, gate adjustments, straightening leaning sections, and storm-damage cleanup. If the fence is near the end of its life, we'll give you an honest read on whether repair or full fence replacement is the better value, and we can often phase larger projects, so the work fits your plans.
One local note worth knowing: Clarendon Hills requires a fence permit not only for new fences but for repairs and modifications as well. It's an easy step to miss, so we'll flag it when it applies and help you get the paperwork in order before we start.
Fence Permits & Local Code in Clarendon Hills
Every village handles fences a little differently, and Clarendon Hills has a few specifics worth knowing before you build (Village Zoning Ordinance):
- A fence permit is required for the construction, repair, and modification of all fences.
- Residential height limits: generally, up to 3 feet in front and corner-side yards, and up to 6 feet in interior side and rear yards.
- Corner-lot visibility: Near a street intersection, fences, walls, and hedges are limited to 3 feet in height to keep sightlines clear, an important one given how many corner lots the village has.
- Finished side out: The finished side of the fence (the side without the supports) must face neighboring properties.
- Drainage matters: A fence can't be built to block natural stormwater runoff, and the bottom of the panel isn't allowed to sit more than a few inches above the existing grade, a detail that trips up out-of-town installers but one we plan for on every DuPage County job.
First Fence help you with the permit process by preparing the drawings, the plat of survey, and the material details the Village asks for. You must submit the application and obtain the permit, since it's issued in the property owner's name. We'll guide you through the process and make sure you have everything you need, but we don't file for or obtain the permit for you.
(Local codes change from time to time. We confirm current requirements with the Village before every installation.)

Fence Services in Clarendon Hills FAQs
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Clarendon Hills?
Yes. Clarendon Hills requires a fence permit for new fences and, notably, for fence repairs and modifications as well. First Fence prepares the drawings, plat of survey, and material details the Village needs; the property owner submits the application and obtains the permit, since it's issued in the owner's name.
How tall can my fence be in Clarendon Hills?
Under the Village's zoning ordinance, residential fences are generally limited to about 3 feet in front and corner-side yards and up to 6 feet in interior side and rear yards. Corner lots have added visibility rules near intersections. We confirm the exact limits for your lot before installation.
What kind of wood fence does First Fence install?
We install Western Red Cedar for our wood fences. If you've been reading about pressure-treated pine, it's a fair question to bring up, and our consultants are happy to walk you through the options so you can choose what fits your home.
Which fence is the lowest maintenance?
Vinyl and aluminum are the favorites for homeowners who'd rather not fuss over their fence. Vinyl cleans up with a hose and never needs staining, while aluminum's powder-coated finish holds up for years. Composite is another strong low-maintenance option with the look of wood.
Can First Fence repair my existing fence instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. We handle post replacement, panel and gate repairs, straightening, and storm damage. If a repair makes sense, that's what we'll recommend; if the fence is past saving, we'll tell you honestly and can phase a larger replacement to fit your budget and schedule.
Do you install pool fences in Clarendon Hills?
Yes. Pool enclosures are handled as part of the swimming pool permit and inspection process in Clarendon Hills, and we'll help make sure your fence and self-latching gates meet safety requirements ahead of your inspection.
Does First Fence install commercial fencing and gates?
Absolutely. We provide commercial fence installation, security fencing, privacy screening, code-compliant dumpster enclosures, and gate installation, including access-control and automated gate systems, for businesses and properties throughout Clarendon Hills.
