Why Wheaton Homeowners Call First Fence
We're a family-owned fence contractor based in nearby Hillside, and Wheaton has long been part of our service area. That local familiarity matters more than it might sound. Wheaton's fence rules have a few wrinkles you won't find in every suburb and getting them right the first time saves you the headache of a corrected install or a stalled permit.
The one that trips people up most is corner lots. Wheaton designates 33 high-volume streets in its city code, and what you're allowed to build in a corner side yard depends on which street you're next to. Along one of those busier streets, a corner side yard fence may be permitted up to six feet, solid or open. But where that corner side yard sits directly next to a driveway, a neighbor's front yard, or a right-of-way or alley that meets the street, the limit drops to a four-foot decorative fence. If your home sits on a corner, this detail is worth sorting out before anything goes in the ground. We'll walk the property with you and lay out what's allowed where.
Residential Fences in Wheaton
Every yard is a little different, and so is every reason for fencing one in. Here are the residential fence types we install most often for Wheaton homeowners.
Custom-Designed Fences
When a standard style isn't quite right for your home, we design one that is. Custom work is where First Fence started, and it's still what we do best: matching a fence to your home's architecture, your landscaping, and the way you use your yard. This is a natural fit for Wheaton's more distinctive homes and larger lots, where a fence is very much part of the first impression.
Wood Fences
There's a timeless warmth to a wood fence, and it remains one of the most popular choices for privacy and classic curb appeal. The wood we install is Western Red Cedar, prized for its natural resistance to weather and its rich, even grain. Board-on-board and shadowbox styles are worth knowing about here, since Wheaton's code specifically recognizes a shadowbox or board-on-board fence as one that looks the same from both sides.
Vinyl (PVC) Fences
Vinyl is for the homeowner who doesn't want a fence that requires maintenance. It won't need painting or staining, it holds its color, and a quick rinse keeps it looking new. It's an easy, low-maintenance way to get real backyard privacy without a standing to-do list.
Composite Fences
Composite gives you the look of wood with far less upkeep. It's durable, pest-resistant, waterproof, and highly customizable, making a strong option for homeowners who want warmth and texture without seasonal maintenance.
Chain Link Fences
Practical, affordable, and hard to beat for simply closing off the yard for pets and play. Chain link is a workhorse for larger lots and rear yards. Keep in mind that Wheaton restricts chain link in front yards, so we'll help you place it where it's both allowed and useful.
Aluminum Fencing
Clean, elegant, and virtually maintenance-free, aluminum fencing gives you the ornamental look of iron in a lighter, rust-resistant material. It's a favorite for pool enclosures and for defining a yard without blocking the view, and it handles gentle grade changes gracefully.
Ornamental Steel Fences
When you want more heft and presence than aluminum, ornamental steel delivers a substantial, architectural look with excellent strength. It's a fitting choice for the kind of estate-style perimeter Wheaton is known for.
Iron Fences
For genuine wrought iron character and craftsmanship, our iron fencing brings a classic, hand-built look that suits Wheaton's historic homes and formal landscapes beautifully.
Gate Installation
A fence is only as good as the gate you use every day. We install and repair everything from a single walk gate to double-drive gates and self-closing, self-latching gates for pool areas that are sized, hung, and hardware-matched so they swing true and latch cleanly for years.
Specialty Fencing
Pool Fencing
If you have a pool or are planning to install one, the fence around it is part of keeping everyone safe and getting through inspection. In Wheaton, pool enclosures are handled as part of the swimming pool permit process, with requirements for height and for self-closing, self-latching gates whose latches sit out of a child's reach. We build code-conscious pool enclosures, most often in aluminum for its clear sightlines and rust resistance, designed around your inspection timeline.
Dog Runs
For dog owners who want a dedicated space, a purpose-built dog run keeps your pet secure and your yard intact. We'll build one sized to your dog and your lot.
Pergolas, Trellises & Custom Woodworking
Fencing is only part of what we do. Our custom woodworking team builds pergolas, trellises, and other structures that turn a yard into an outdoor living space.
Aluminum Railings
Safe, good-looking railings for porches, steps, and raised decks, in finishes that coordinate with your fence and home.
Commercial Fencing in Wheaton
As DuPage County's seat, Wheaton is home to government offices, professional buildings, schools, retail corridors, and light-industrial sites, each with its own security and appearance needs. First Fence handles commercial and specialty projects of every size, and we schedule the work around your operations.
Commercial Chain Link
The dependable standard for perimeter security, storage yards, and athletic or recreational areas. Durable, cost-effective, and available in heights and gauges to match the job.
Ornamental Steel & Aluminum
When a property needs security that still looks polished, such as office parks, institutional grounds, and retail frontages, ornamental metal fencing sets a professional tone without sacrificing strength.
Industrial & Recreational Fencing
Heavier-duty systems for manufacturing sites, utilities, ball fields, and other specialized applications where performance comes first.
Access Control & Automated Gates
Slide and swing gate operators, keypads, and controlled-entry systems that manage who comes and goes, integrated cleanly with your fencing.
Dumpster & Equipment Enclosures
Screened enclosures that keep service areas tidy, contained, and consistent with your building's look.
For property managers and business owners, we're glad to provide detailed proposals, handle work in phases, and keep communication clear from start to finish.
Fence Repair & Replacement
Wheaton's mature trees are one of its best features, right up until a summer storm sends a limb into your fence line. When wind, age, or an accident takes a toll, First Fence can repair your fence to keep your property secure. We handle leaning or rotted posts, damaged and missing panels, gates that no longer close, and full section replacement. We'll give you an honest read on whether a repair will hold or whether replacement is the better value, and we'll match materials as closely as the existing fence allows. If the whole line is due, larger replacements can often be phased to fit your schedule.
Fence Permits & Code in Wheaton
Wheaton requires a permit for most fence installations, and the application asks for specific paperwork such as a legal plat of survey drawn at its original scale showing the fence location, height, gates, and utility features, plus a fence detail showing the height and the spacing of the intermediate rails. Pool enclosures carry additional gate requirements handled through the pool permit process.
First Fence helps prepare the drawings, the plat of survey details, and the material specifications your application needs. You as the property owner must submit and obtain the permit, since it is issued in your name. That way the paperwork is done right, and you stay in control of the approval that carries your name.

Fencing Services in Wheaton, IL FAQs
Do I need a permit to install a fence in Wheaton?
Yes, most fence projects in Wheaton require a permit. The city asks for a plat of survey showing the fence location and height and a detail of the fence itself, including rail spacing. First Fence helps prepare these materials; the property owner submits the application and obtains the permit, because it's issued in the owner's name.
How tall can my fence be if I'm on a corner lot?
It depends on which street your corner side yard faces. Wheaton designates 33 high-volume streets, and a corner side yard along one of them may be allowed up to six feet. Where the corner side yard sits directly next to a driveway, a neighbor's front yard, or an intersecting right-of-way or alley, the limit is generally a four-foot decorative fence. We'll confirm what applies to your specific lot before we build.
What kind of wood fencing do you install?
We install Western Red Cedar, which stands up well to weather and ages beautifully. If you've read about pressure-treated pine and want to compare, that's a fair question, just ask, and we'll walk you through what we build with.
Can you install a fence that meets pool safety requirements?
Yes. We build pool enclosures designed around Wheaton's requirements, including self-closing and self-latching gates, and we work to your inspection timeline. Pool fencing is handled as part of the swimming pool permit process.
My fence was damaged in a storm, can it be repaired?
Often, yes. We repair leaning posts, broken panels, and gates that won't close, and we'll tell you honestly when a repair makes sense versus a replacement. We match existing materials as closely as we can.
Do you offer commercial fencing in Wheaton?
We do. We install chain link, ornamental steel and aluminum, industrial and recreational fencing, access-control and automated gates, and dumpster enclosures for businesses, institutions, and property managers with detailed proposals and phased scheduling available.
